Celebrated in novels, « Notre-Dame de Paris » by Victor Hugo, films and even in television... the cathedral is known the world over.
The imposing Notre-Dame is located on Ile de la Cité, the historical and geographical centre of Paris. If you stand on the esplanade in front of the cathedral, you will discover that this monument is truly ‘the heart of France’. As « le point zéro » indicates, the bronze star etched in the ground is the point of departure from which all distances are measured in the hexagon.
Still on the esplanade, observe the two towers of this gothic work of art, chiseled in the manner of a silversmith. Even though the towers may look similar, the northern tower to the left is actually wider than the other.
If you climb up one of the towers you have an incredible view of the city. Don’t be afraid of the malefic animals and fantastical beasts that seem to scream out at you as you go by. Built to re-create the unsettling atmosphere of the Middle Ages, these Chimeras are purely decorative and the Gargoyles, situated at each corner, serve as drainpipes to evacuate water in the gutters. On rainy days, don’t miss a chance to see these stone monsters transformed into fountains.
