In 1860, Charles Garnier won an architectural competition with project that was an exuberant mixture of pomp, refinement and eclecticism. And so the largest opera house in Europe was built, in the style of the Second Empire.
Degas was a great lover of music and dance and regularly attended the Opera. He enjoyed stepping backstage and attending rehearsals both on stage or in the entrance hall.
