Based on a collection unique in Europe, Pays de Meaux Museum of the Great War offers a new vision of the first world conflict [1914-1918], through innovative scenography illustrating the great changes and upheavals that resulted in society.
Covering 3,000 m², its permanent exhibition deals with all aspects of the conflict showing that between 1914 and 1918 the world moved from the 19th to the 20th century.
A tour lasting approximately 1h15 offers an immersion into History. Visitors leave the current world to be plunged into the 1870s, a period of the first tensions (loss of Alsace-Moselle and the birth of a spirit of revenge, maritime, colonial and economic rivalries, separation into two blocks, the arms race...) that contributed to the start of the First World War, up to 1939 on the eve of the Second World War.
Themed areas supplement the tour (for when visitors have a half-day or a day to spare). Visitors can thus explore the different aspects of the conflict through, in particular:
New war: development of technologies such as artillery, camouflage, communications…
Women and society: place and decisive role played by women in the conflict.
Daily life in the trenches: the lives of millions of men in the trenches.
Tactics and strategy: evolution of strategic issues and portraits of the men who developed them.
Globalisation: the game of alliances and the involvement of colonial empires.
From Bled to the trenches: participation in the conflict of men from the colonies and French protectorates.
The United States of America: reconstruction of an American camp and the importance of the American expeditionary corps in the final victory.
