L'Opéra Royal

Every year at the Château de Versailles you can come and discover almost 80 baroque and classical music shows in all their different forms including staged opera, various concerts, sacred music, ballets in some of the most prestigious parts of the Château dedicated to music: the Royal Opera (Opéra Royal) and the Royal Chapel (Chapelle Royale).

The Royal Opera at the Château de Versailles

Inaugurated in 1770 for the wedding of the Dauphin, the future Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette of Austria, the Royal Opera quickly became one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe. Some of the great performances of the 18th century took place here, including Lully and Rameau.

Today, Château de Versailles Spectacles has brought this venue back to life and every year it plays host to a musical season of leading conductors, orchestras and performers, including Cecilia Bartoli, Jordi Savall, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Robert King, William Christie, Leonardo García Alarcón, Ton Koopman, Diego Fasolis, Philippe Jaroussky, Max Emanuel Cencic, Vivica Genaux, Jonas Kaufmann and Franco Fagioli.

The Royal Chapel at the Château de Versailles

This exceptional palace chapel on two levels was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1699 and 1708, and finished by Robert de Cotte in 1710. Until the French Revolution, the chapel was used for all sorts of religious ceremonies, including the wedding of the Archduchess Marie-Antoinette to the future Louis XVI.

Many sacred music concerts have been held in this unique setting.
