The Musée d'Orsay is one of the world's most famous museums.
The museum's success is due to its unique setting in a former railway station and its superb Impressionist collection, not to mention the rich calendar of events on offer: exhibitions, concerts, shows, film festivals, symposia and art history courses. Close to 4000 exhibits dating from 1848–1914 showcase the painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts and architecture of this decisive period in the history of art. Artists include: Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cézanne, as well as Millet, Courbet, Carpeaux, Rodin and Maillol.
Spotlight on Impressionism
The Musée d'Orsay invites visitors to rediscover a large proportion of its collections. At the end of 2011, following two years of renovation work, the museum opened a new temporary exhibition hall as well as five levels entirely dedicated to the decorative arts, enabling visitors to get a fresh take on the works housed here. But it is the Impressionists gallery that really makes an impact.
With redesigned displays and new lighting, masterpieces reveal their use of colours against a backdrop of coloured walls and picture rails painted a subtle grey, whilst sculptures are presented in understated and spacious window displays. The dark parquet flooring dotted with modern "Water Block" benches made from optical glass provides contrast with these splashes of colour.
