It has been home to a long list of kings, emperors and marshals and was the property of Charles X. It has also hosted thinkers and writers such as Voltaire and Benjamin Constant...

The Château de Maisons is the work of architect François Mansart who, at the request of the owner, the President of the Parliament of Paris, René de Longueuil, created a building of perfect symmetry integrated in vast wooded grounds, which are greatly reduced today. Completed in 1651, the château was opened in a sumptuous manner in the presence of Anne of Austria and her young son, Louis XIV.

Admire the exterior facades showcasing three architectural styles (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian). Inside, you can discover the Salon des Captifs and its carved fireplace, then the lobby and its Doric columns. Upstairs, the King’s apartment, with its barrel vaulted ceiling, and the Cabinet des miroirs, which consists of marquetry parquet inlaid with bone and tin, are not to be missed.

Complete your visit with the old kitchens of the château, which are now the setting of a permanent exhibition consisting of three hundred fascinating objects, tracing another facet of the château’s history. Racing enthusiast, the Comte d’Artois bought the Château de Maisons in 1777. He restored Mansart’s stables (which have now disappeared) and created a track to train his thirty horses. The beginning of a long history between the town of Maisons-Laffitte and horse racing, which is told in this exciting exhibition.
